A much different approach to travel
We like extremes, we are told. Most campers don’t cruise and most cruisers don’t camp. I’ll admit that we saw much more of this country by camping and driving but we certainly are enjoying the pampering and the amenities here! Through a series of price reductions for this cruise we were offered an upgrade to a suite overlooking the bow of the boat. We almost never (well, to be entirely truthful–never, never) book a suite so this has been a great surprise. We aren’t quite sure what to do with a cabin steward, a butler, and a concierge but sharing stories with them has been quite fun! We find nice gifts each day in our suite and we sit in the front floor-to-ceiling window and pretend we are captaining the boat! Then there was room service breakfast – not the usual delivery to the door. Instead, it was a white tablecloth affair! We plan to invite Cindy and Matt to dinner with us tomorrow- our treat. LOL.
As with all cruises, we’ve enjoyed the entertainment, the drink package, the specialty dining, the hot tubs and so much more. It’s a bit cold for the pools and we haven’t tried our hand at the casino yet. George is threatening to give karaoke a go. (I’ll be sure to record it!)
OK. Enough of that!
It is day three and we have visited two ports. Yesterday, we toured the small village of Isafjorour. It required a tender to get there. Once there, Matt rented a scooter but Cindy, George, and I walked around. It was scenic with a small harbor. We found the local grocery store and pharmacy. Weirdly, we always enjoy looking around there. We had drinks in the local hotel, toured a bookstore and made our way back to the ship.
Today we are in Akureyri. We passed through here on our drive. It is the second biggest city in Iceland but still small by our standards. We boarded the local free bus and took a circular drive around the town. We enjoyed people watching as we drove around. Construction is very similar to us although the primary building material is cement. Matt and Cindy visited the botanical gardens while we continued on the old town. We are currently sitting inside Centrum Hotel people watching and posting this blog!
There is still never complete darkness but between midnight and 4:00am it is almost dark.
Hoping there will be more exciting events in the near future.
